Students jump for the joy of learning about the culture and lifestyle of France, in Boonton’s Classrooms Without Walls program.

At Boonton High School, the world is a classroom.

District officials believe it is essential to provide students with extended and unique learning opportunities, moving them beyond the traditional classroom to prepare them for the 21st Century.

In the Classroom Without Walls program, students learn about awareness, tolerance, history, culture, art, politics and more, by engaging in world travel and pre-trip study.

Classroom Without Walls has taken Boonton students to landmarks such as the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and more. But before they set foot out of the country, students take part in extensive pre-trip studies, for which they earn academic credit. They use a range of technology tools to capture experiences, and take part in public speaking and presentations after they return to the high school.

Students also engage in fundraising for the trip, operating concessions at graduation, selling snacks after school, holding a car wash, running a “Paris Flea Market,” and working part-time help cover costs.

So far, Classrooms Without Walls students have travelled to France, Spain and Italy, and are slated to visit Costa Rica, Quebec and Montreal next year. Also in the works is a short-term-stay summer program with students from Beijing.
