The Green Brook Middle School is on a mission to help students become self-directed learners. The school is working to help students learn take responsibility for their own decision-making; select, manage and assess their own learning; and organize their time, materials and ideas.

Students in grades 5-8 take an active role in creating their own schedules, by choosing some of their courses. Fifth- and sixth-graders can select related arts courses, while seventh- and eighth-graders can choose among courses such as Computer Programming, MineCraft, and the Study of Musicals and Playwriting. In addition, the school schedule includes time for “personal growth,” in which students direct their academic, social and emotional growth. Students may work in “PEER Groups” discussing topics and issues that are important to them, or select enrichment courses to explore talents and interests, such as Yoga and Fitness, Sewing or Debate. There is also time available for academic support, in which students may work with teachers and peers.
