Students in 7th and 8th grade in Bayonne are making a big commitment to build their skills in science, technology, engineering and math. They are taking time away from their regular weekend pursuits, and coming to classes on Saturdays, to learn computer coding, math enrichment and more.

Classes are taught by certified math and science teachers, under the supervision of the district’s directors of mathematics and science. The Gateways to STEM program enhances the middle school science and math program, and gives students an extra opportunity to acquire crucial skills they will need to be college and career-ready for STEM-related fields. About 400 students stepped forward to take part, when the program began.

The program, which is offered at no cost to students, provides math enrichment classes for seventh-graders, and computer science and life science classes for eighth-graders. Classes take place in the Bayonne High School STEM wing on select Saturdays. All students who successfully applied to participate were accepted.
