TRENTON, January 5, 2018—Dr. Lawrence S. Feinsod, executive director of the New Jersey School Boards Association, today issued a statement following the death of former Governor Brendan T. Byrne.

Governor Byrne, 93, passed away yesterday. He served in office from 1974 to 1982.

“Even though Brendan Byrne served as governor more than 40 years ago, the policies, principles and beliefs that guided his administration formed a legacy for New Jersey,” said Feinsod. “In particular, the shape of public education as we know it today, including initiatives to advance funding equity, state testing and special and remedial education, evolved from policies of his administration.

“The New Jersey School Boards Association extends its condolences to the family of Governor Byrne. He was a highly principled and forthright leader, whose service continues to impact the lives of New Jerseyans.”
