NJSBA Officers Attend National Advocacy Institute
A New Jersey delegation of 25 travelled to Washington, D.C. for the National School Boards Association’s Advocacy Institute recently. Attendees, who included local board members, NJSBA officers and others, were provided the opportunity to speak with members of Congress and the U.S. Senate; attend meetings on Capitol Hill; and discuss federal issues that impact public education.
U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (Dist. 1) hosted a congressional breakfast for school board members, and NJSBA officers and staff, on the “Day on the Hill” in Washington DC. Norcross has just been appointed to the Education and Workforce Committee. Leonard Lance (Dist. 7) spoke to New Jersey school board members about federal issues impacting public education.NJSBA State Officers and school board members met with staff of U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez to discuss federal issues pertaining to funding. This conversation focused on the lack of federal funding from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Title 1 funds. New Jersey is known for having exceptional special needs programs, but IDEA is not fully funded.
