Michael Payton, who served on the Franklin Borough Board of Education in Sussex County for 13 years, died on May 31. He was 68 years old.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Payton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Glassboro State University, and was a program analyst for Picatinny Arsenal in Dover for 37 years, before retiring.

In addition to his volunteer service on the board of education, he was a Little League coach and a basketball referee.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary; his sons Timothy Payton, and girlfriend Kelsey Blanchard and Christopher Payton and girlfriend Daniela Decena of Franklin, his brother and sister-in-law Frank and Jenny Payton of Brewster, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law Mary and Jack Cishek of Johnsonburg, and several nieces and nephews.
