There are many ways to gauge the success of Workshop 2017: Counting attendees on the Exhibit Floor, tallying hours spent by board members in training programs, watching people enjoy the student performing arts groups in the Atrium and County Café, and on the Exhibit Hall Stage.

Below are some measures of the state’s largest training conference for public school leaders – call it, Workshop by the Numbers.

32 – STEAM Tank student inventor teams in the finals of the STEAM Tank Challenge, who presented inventions ranging from “Energy Generating Sneakers” to “Pop Furniture” to “The Extremely Cozy Pet Bed.”

500 dozen – Cookies, from chocolate chip to snickerdoodles, baked by New Jersey public school students, and enjoyed at the Workshop County Café.

8 – New Jersey public schools that baked cookies for Workshop. Bakers were Cape May County and Sussex County technical schools; Camden County Technical Institute; Culinary Education Center, Monmouth County Vocational School District; Cumberland County Technical Education Center; Gloucester County Institute of Technology; Morris County School of Technology; and Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School.

709 – Total gallons of coffee, decaf and hot water – for tea – served during Workshop. That’s 420 gallons of coffee; 136 gallons of decaf, and 153 gallons of hot water.

248 – Training sessions offered throughout four days of Workshop, on topics ranging from contract negotiations to media relations to “Boards Gone Wild!”

1– Appearance (via video message) by a bona fide rock star, Steven Van Zandt, who introduced a student performing group and talked about his Rock and Roll Foundation’s STEAM collaboration with NJSBA.
