As part of NJSBA’s commitment to helping schools across New Jersey reach their sustainability goals, Workshop 2016 will feature a new Sustainable and Healthy Schools Center on the exhibit floor. In addition to training sessions, the area will feature government agencies and non-profit organizations demonstrating their sustainability and healthy school best practices. Workshop will be held Oct. 25-27 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Schools and districts interested in or registered for the Sustainable Jersey for Schools (SJS) certification program will have an opportunity to meet representatives from Sustainable Jersey. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet with representatives from NJSBA to learn about its new sustainability consulting services, designed to align with SJS actions toward certification. In addition, representatives will be available from ACESplus to discuss how the program can help districts advance their sustainability initiatives.

Other features include a partnership between the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and FoodCorps to demonstrate how to successfully introduce students to new menu items in schools by delivering a taste test. In addition, the YMCA of Trenton will lead a physical activity for attendees, and will share how they partnered with Joyce Kilmer School in Trenton, through a grant, to create an after-school wellness program. Carbon Neutral Event For the third year in a row, Workshop 2016 will be a carbon-neutral event. In an effort to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions generated to meet the needs of the conference, the three host organizations invest in offsetting the carbon footprint. Such a process involves making a donation that pays for reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere elsewhere – such as a renewable energy or reforestation project – to balance out the emissions created.

Workshop Registration and Cost The cost of Workshop group registration for boards of education and member charter schools is $1,400. Individual registration is $275. The group registration covers up to 14 team members, and may include school board members, the business administrator, superintendent, facilities manager, curriculum coordinator and technology director. School business administrators may start the registration process online at any time.

More Information School officials should ask their school business administrator to register their districts for Workshop 2016 as soon as possible. Information on registrationhousingevent schedules and more can be found on the Workshop website.
