Notable Recent Settlements

Teacher contract settlements that cover the 2015-16 school year have increased slightly from 2.45% this time last year, to 2.54%. Teacher’s contract settlements which START with the 2015-16 school year are reporting an average increase of 2.68% this year, and 2.62% for 2016-17. It is important when examining settlement rates that you view each district’s settlement in its’ entirety. The rates listed above do not show the complete picture of concession/givebacks that the board gained from the union. Please reference the report in the paragraph below titled “Settlement Rates in Perspective” for details on each districts reported achievements. Results from our survey to the 212 districts whose teachers contract have expired on 6/30/2015 are showing that 94 are unsettled and 118 have reached a successor agreement, many of which are pending ratification. (Note: tentative settlements are not calculated into the above averages until fully ratified by both parties). In addition, there are still approximately 29 districts who have not yet reached an agreement for contracts which expired 6/30/2014 or earlier.

*NOTE: Districts are asked to supply their settlement increases inclusive of increment. Those which have reported a wage freeze to NJSBA are indicating that there will be no increment (i.e. no step advancement) and teachers will be frozen at their current rate of pay for one year. All settlement information is reported to NJSBA through surveys of the district administration offices.
