Mandated Training
NJSBA offers two ways for board members to fulfill their state mandated training requirement: in-person and online training.
New Jersey state law requires school board members and charter school trustees to attend training in the first, second and third years of a first term, and in the first year of a re-elected or reappointed term. NJSBA is the state-designated provider of Mandated Training, which is available at no cost to members.
The New Jersey School Boards Association offers its members numerous formats to fulfill this requirement, including live virtual training, self-paced online courses, and in-person training.*

Virtual Training
NJSBA Comprehensive Virtual Training with Staff and Group Leaders
(Formally known as New Board Member Weekend Orientation)
This program gives participants a unique opportunity to work in virtual small-group settings with experienced veteran board members. The program will allow members the flexibility to read and work through materials at their pace, attend live sessions with veteran board members and a clinic session with NJSBA staff to exchange ideas, ask questions and participate in discussions. This program will take a deeper dive into the board member experience and will include more informational sessions than other formats.

Live Virtual Sessions
Throughout the year, NJSBA staff will present information new board members need to perform their responsibilities effectively. This format allows time for questions and answers. The Live Virtual new board member sessions are scheduled in three consecutive live sessions, each lasting approximately two hours. Members must attend all three session dates consecutively to fulfill the Governance One requirement and receive Board Member Academy credit.

Self-Paced Online Course
The self-paced, interactive session allows board members to take the course at their convenience. Completion of this course fulfills the School District Accountability Act Mandated Training requirement.
Governance II, III AND IV
Governance II: 1st Term, 2nd full year of service – Finance
Governance III: 1st Term, 3rd full year of service – Student Achievement
Governance IV: Re-elected/reappointed board members in the first year of any succeeding term – Legal Update
NOTE: Board members appointed to an unexpired term do not need to complete Mandated Training.
