Communication needs have increased and become more complex for public school districts. Districts have a duty to educate and inform residents, in order to foster public awareness and support for the district and its strategic initiatives – as well as for its students and employees. Keeping residents informed also improves and safeguards the district’s reputation; builds internal morale; creates an atmosphere conducive to education; and builds public trust.

Nowadays, social media is part of a communication plan. Schools are busy places, and parents need a trusted place to find the right information. Gone are the days of a website being just a digital brochure. The Bergenfield School district uses a social media specialist who oversees Twitter, Facebook, blogs and YouTube as strategies for engaging the entire school community, creating an integrated, multi-media and face-to-face communication plan.
