student-achievement-redefining-homework-policies

Homework does not have to be an object of dread. Homework can promote learning, foster a positive classroom environment, and “prime” students’ brains for learning. The Freehold Township School District has received excellent feedback for its work in improving homework practices – or, as district officials call it, “home learning.”

Based on the most current research regarding effective homework, the district believes creating home learning enhances students’ knowledge and skills and fosters a positive classroom environment. Designing homework assignments to be motivating and interesting is key. Policy implications regarding grading, and establishing limits on the amount of homework assigned, should also be considered.

Freehold Township educators presented at NJSBA’s Centennial Workshop 2014, and were asked to share at a national ASCD conference, as well as a county Superintendents’ Roundtable. They were also interviewed on OpenMIcOnEducation.

Homework – or home learning – impacts student achievement and school climate. When done right, this district believes, it can enhance both.
