The Peshine Avenue School in Newark has been recognized for its efforts to spark girls’ interest in engineering and computer science.

The Newark school was recently selected to receive a $50,000 grant from Samsung to increase access to tools for science, technology, engineer and math learning. The school was chosen following its completion of a pilot program that aimed to inspire fourth- and fifth-grade girls to pursue careers in engineering and computer science. The program introduced the students to the people, technologies and processes behind the software and hardware in their everyday lives.

The announcement was made at a final showcase event for the program – called emPOWER Tomorrow – during which U.S. Senator Cory Booker, along with Newark school officials and Samsung Electronics North America executives, congratulated participants.
