To inspire young women to pursue or continue to pursue studies and careers in STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics – Summit held a community-wide workshop for middle and high school girls and their mothers or other significant women in their lives.

Hosted by school board member Gloria Ron-Fornes, who was then board president, and Mayor Ellen Dickson, the event drew more than 100 students. Events included panels of women discussing careers in STEAM and sharing their personal stories, as well as activities that engaged the girls and their mothers with these women as mentors. Teachers, administrators and district staff were involved in creating the agenda, selecting activities, and managing activities. Local businesses donated and served breakfast and lunch.

The event, which was also presented during NJSBA’s Centennial Workshop 2014, provided Summit students with a relaxed, professional environment for the exchange of ideas, stories and inspiration.
