At the Franklin Township School in Hunterdon County, there’s a new “superhero” in town: Super STEM.
Teachers throughout the K-8 school district are working together, using cross-content lesson planning, to incorporate learning in science, technology, engineering and math.
The Super STEM program incorporates project-based learning activities with STEM curriculum, which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and career-ready practices. Teachers work across content areas to integrate projects that use the arts, computers, technology and social studies topics. Among other interesting projects, students learn to design tools, games and inventions.
Learning in STEM goes beyond the traditional academic areas as well. All special teachers infuse frequent writing activities in their lessons, using a range of technology tools – laptops, desktop computers, Chromebooks, and IPads. The goal is to develop student fluency in using many genres of technology.
