The Beverly City School District, in Burlington County, and the Sussex Avenue School, in the Morris School District in Morris County, have been named 2017 National Title I Distinguished Schools.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) announced the honors earlier this month. Beverly School received the recognition for significantly closing the achievement gap between student groups, and Sussex Avenue School was recognized for excellence in serving diverse populations of students, such as homeless and English language learners.

“Our vision is for all students to have access to the high-quality education they deserve, and these schools are doing amazing work to make this a reality for each and every one of their students,” said Education Commissioner Kimberley Harrington.

The two schools were identified as needing assistance, and the NJDOE provided them targeted supports to help them improve. “Beverly City School District and Sussex Avenue School are great examples what can be accomplished when schools utilize the NJDOE’s support system to help all students demonstrate academic growth,” Harrington added.

The 2017 Title I Distinguished Schools Program is sponsored by the National Association of State Title I Directors. Each school will receive $10,000 to use to support Title I programs, and be recognized along with other Title I Distinguished Schools from across the nation at the National Title I Conference. The attending school staff from each recognized school will have an opportunity to participate in workshops, professional development opportunities and best practices presentations offered during the conference.
