The primary mission of school boards is to promote student achievement. The latest issue of School Leader magazine features a special section focused on that topic that will help board members learn more about the factors that contribute to student learning.

The section includes a preview of some of the recommendations from the NJSBA’s Task Force on Student Achievement, an interview with an expert on early childhood education, and an article on what districts should look for when hiring a new principal.

The magazine also shines a spotlight on New Jersey’s Board Member of the Year, Sheli Dansky, a 26-veteran of the River Edge board. Along with serving her own board, Dansky has spent years being a dedicated trainer of new board members, as well as an active leader in the Bergen County School Boards Association.

This issue also has an article on NJSBA’s recommendations to the New Jersey Department of Education concerning the accountability regulations, which sunset in May. The story provides details on the conclusions that a task force of board members, experts and NJSBA staff came to after a year-long study.

In addition, the magazine’s policy column features a look at a controversy in head lice policy that asks when students should be excluded from a classroom because of head lice.

School Leader magazine is published six times a year; it is available online here.
