American Legion Jersey Boys State, a weeklong leadership conference for male high school students entering their senior year, has opened its application process to any junior, whether the school is covered by an active Legion post or not. This year’s program will take place June 18-23 at Rider University in Lawrenceville.

“With this pilot program, set to begin this year for our 72nd session, any male student in their junior year of high school is invited to apply on-line…,” wrote David S. Bagatelle, director of American Legion Jersey Boys State, in a letter to high school principals. Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 3, 2017.

In addition, the ALJBS traditional application process, which involves selection and sponsorship by a local American Legion Post, will remain in effect.

“As a former superintendent of schools, I appreciate the opportunity that American Legion Jersey Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Jersey Girls State provide our students to learn about government, civic responsibility, and community leadership,” said Dr. Lawrence S. Feinsod, NJSBA executive director. “They are excellent programs.”

Legislation enacted in February 2016 permits New Jersey colleges and universities to grant students up to three credits for successful completion of Jersey Boys State and Jersey Girls State.

Graduates of Jersey Boys State include U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Governor Chris Christie, Congressman Leonard Lance, and incoming National School Boards Association President Kevin Ciak.

Activities at ALJBS include legislative sessions, general assemblies, court proceedings, athletics, band and career seminars.
