On June 1, P.L. 2018, c. 5, colloquially referred to as the “pass the trash” law, was enacted. It requires school districts, charter schools, nonpublic schools and contracted service providers to review the employment history of job applicants to ascertain if they have had past allegations or instances of child abuse or sexual misconduct against students.

The New Jersey Department of Education has posted a webpage to provide resources to assist school districts with the pre-employment requirements of the law.  The page includes employment forms that may be used to complete the required employment history review.

There is also a “frequently asked questions” page that addresses common questions on the requirements of the new law.
