Countless studies and reports agree with the World Economic Forum that students need outstanding social-emotional skills to be successful in school, family, community, workplace, and civic life, regardless of what new technologies emerge in the future. For students to achieve those skills, they must attend schools dedicated to promoting their social-emotional competence and character.

Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., a nationally-recognized expert on social-emotional and character development, will present the keynote address at Workshop 2017, which will elaborate on why and how school leaders must make the commitment to create schools that will prepare students for the tests of life.

Dr. Elias will address the NJSBA/NJASA/NJASBO Annual Workshop Conference crowd on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. in the Exhibit Floor Theater. The Workshop conference will take place at the Atlantic City Convention Center from Monday through Thursday, Oct. 23-26.

Dr. Elias, a professor in the Psychology Department at Rutgers University, is director of Rutgers’ Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab. He has received the Sanford McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education, and the Joseph E. Zins Memorial Senior Scholar Award for Social-Emotional Learning from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Books he has authored or co-authored include: Emotionally Intelligent Parenting: How to Raise a Self-Disciplined, Responsible, Socially Skilled Child;The Educator’s Guide to Emotional Intelligence and Academic Achievement: Social-Emotional Learning in the Classroom, Talking Treasure: Stories to Help Build Emotional Intelligence and Resilience in Young Children, Schools of Social-Emotional Competence and Character; Urban Dreams: Stories of Hope, Character, and Resilience and, most recently, The Joys & Oys of Parenting. Workshop Registration/Pricing/Housing Through this Friday, June 30, NJSBA is offering a special “early bird” group registration rate of $1,400. The regular group registration rate of $1,500 will go into effect on July 1. The individual member rate is $300 per person. The expanded Workshop group registration now covers 18 team members (up from 14 team members) and may include the following: school board members, business administrator, superintendent, facilities managers, curriculum professionals, IT staff, and other district professionals. Registration is available online, and must be handled by the school business administrator. A block of hotel rooms have been secured at a number of hotels for Workshop 2017 attendees. Four Days of Training/Travel Waiver The New Jersey Department of Education has expanded the waiver for Workshop 2017. Workshop will now provide an additional day of training, including New Board Member Orientation, on Monday, Oct. 23. The adjusted waiver will also allow school districts to reimburse eligible board members and staff for overnight accommodations for a maximum of three, rather than two, nights. Individuals whose one-way commute to the Atlantic City Convention Center exceeds 50 miles may obtain reimbursement from their school district, charter school, or renaissance school project for overnight lodging for Oct. 23, 24, and 25.

About Workshop 2017 The largest professional development event for school leaders in New Jersey, Workshop 2017 will offer more than 250 training sessions. In addition to opportunities for board members to earn NJSBA Board Member Academy credits, NJSBA has been authorized to issue Qualified Purchasing Agent (QPA) credits for School Business Administrators; professional development credits for Certified Educational Facilities Managers (CEFM); and sustainability credits toward Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.
