Elections for school board seats in most districts take place in November. But candidates for office must file nominating petitions earlier than that — Monday, July 25.
To run for office, school board candidates must each file a petition signed by 10 registered voters of the school district, or in the case of a regional school district, by 10 registered voters of the constituent municipality that the candidate would represent on the board. Petitions are due at the office of the county clerk by 4 p.m. on July 25.
Serving on the school board gives residents an opportunity to contribute to public education and their community. The position is unpaid, but experienced school board members say the rewards come from knowing that they are helping to govern the schools, and furthering the educational achievement of children.
About 90 percent of New Jersey’s public school districts hold elections in November. The remainder hold elections in April, or are appointed.
