The STEAM Tank Challenge, the student invention competition created and sponsored by NJSBA and the U.S. Army, recently announced the winners of the 2017 regional competitions. Winners were chosen following a competition among 90 school district teams. Nineteen teams were selected from the K-8 grade level and 18 teams from grades 9-12. The regional winners will present their inventions to a panel of judges on Oct. 24 and 25 during Workshop 2017. Two statewide winners will be selected: one each from the K-8 and the 9-12 categories.
Launched at Workshop 2016, the STEAM Tank Challenge places student teams in a contest modeled after the “Shark Tank” television show. Teams create innovative projects, and present their inventions to a judging panel of entrepreneurs, business leaders and inventors. The program encourages student achievement in the STEAM education areas—science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.
Last year, the contest was so well received that NJSBA decided to expand it to include three regional competitions, covering the northern, central and southern areas of the state. One hundred ninety-one (191) teams submitted applications, and 90 were selected to compete in the regional challenges.
