On Friday, May 4, the New Jersey School Boards Association will host Student Achievement through Multiple Lenses. This thorough training program will examine student achievement from various perspectives including: social emotional learning; early childhood education; collaboration among staff and district leaders; and equity and excellence.
The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (registration begins at 8:30 a.m.) at the Conference Center at Mercer, 1200 Old Trenton Rd., West Windsor, NJ 08550.
Presentations Include:
- Physics First – Presented by Camden Public High School, Physics First is an initiative that encourages high schools to offer a full-year physics course to ninth-graders, before they take chemistry and biology.
- Saul Rubenstein of the Rutgers School of Labor and Management – Hear about research on the impact of management and union collaboration on student achievement, regardless of zip code, and how it contributes to a healthy school climate. A panel of teachers, administrators, and board of education members from the Borough of Metuchen will share how they applied this collaborative approach and how it has benefited all stakeholders involved.
- Arts Ed NJ – Arts Ed NJ will present on the impact of the arts on student achievement, student emotional learning (SEL), and school climate.
- Steven Barnett, Sr. Co-Director and Founder of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) – Learn about the short- and long-term benefits of pre-K.
Keynote Speaker – Former Commissioner of Education, Kimberley Harrington Before becoming the commissioner of education, Kimberley Harrington served for two years as assistant commissioner/chief academic officer for the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In that role, she oversaw the NJDOE’s Division of Teaching and Learning, which has the responsibilities of the Division of Early Childhood Education, the offices of Primary Education; Intermediate and Secondary Education; Teaching and Learning Support; Academic Initiatives and Fiscal Accountability; Career Readiness; Educational Technology; and School Innovation.
Cost/Registration Information The cost is $99 per person, and the program offers 4 Board Member Academy credits. Registration of school board members and other district staff that have been reported to NJSBA through the completion of the district census form may be completed online, but only by the school business administrator, who must attach a scanned copy of the purchase order with the registration.
Additional non-member district staff members are welcome to register online through Eventbrite using a credit card. (Please check with your business administrator as to policy regarding reimbursement.)
