The New Jersey School Boards Association, a leader in providing training and services to 5,000 local board of education members and charter school trustees, is seeking to fill the position of Director of Legal and Labor Relations Services.

Reporting to the executive director, the successful candidate must be a talented, hands-on attorney who will plan, direct and participate in providing legal and labor relations services to local board of education members and charter school trustees, school attorneys and school administrators.

The successful candidate will perform the following core functions:

  • Train, supervise and evaluate seven staff members;
  • Provide training and serve as a resource to school board members, school attorneys and school administrators;
  • Review and evaluate legal, labor relations and PERC cases for possible amicus participation;
  • Collaborate with general counsel on state policy impacting public education; orally argue Association positions in federal and state trial and appellate courts and administrative bodies;
  • Develop and coordinate the delivery of services and training programs for board members, school attorneys, school administrators and staff;
  • Serve as secretary to the Associate Membership Program for School Attorneys and act as executive secretary of the Educational Negotiators Association of New Jersey and the Personnel Administrators Association of New Jersey.

The ideal candidate must possess: a Juris Doctor degree and be admitted to practice before the New Jersey federal district court and the courts of New Jersey; litigation experience is preferred; demonstrate effective management skills in a complex operating environment; develop and deliver effective presentations; have strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, including the ability to work with a variety of groups and individuals. Five years management and supervisory experience required. Experience with on-line research tools, e.g. Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis, and Windows O/S, required.
