The New Jersey School Boards Association, a leader in providing training and services to 5,000 local board of education members and charter school trustees, is seeking to fill the position of counsel in the Department of Legal and Labor Relations Services.

The successful candidate will provide training and information to local board of education members and charter school trustees, school attorneys and school administrators.

The successful candidate will perform the following core functions:

  • Provide direct assistance/information to school board attorneys, school administrators, school board members and Association staff;
  • Develop and coordinate the delivery of services and training programs for board members, school attorneys, school administrators and staff;
  • Analyze decisions issued by the state commissioner of education, the State Board of Education, School Ethics Commission and other administrative agencies as well as decisions of the federal and New Jersey courts;
  • Prepare amicus review memoranda and prepare amicus briefs as assigned.

The ideal candidate must possess a Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the New Jersey Bar, and admitted to practice before the NJ federal district court and the courts of NJ. Litigation experience is preferred, along with the ability to develop and deliver effective presentations; have strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, including the ability to work with a variety of groups and individuals. Experience with online research tools, e.g. Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis, and Microsoft applications required.
