TRENTON, January 23, 2016—Voters in four New Jersey school districts will go to the polls on Jan. 24 to act on nearly $85 million in school construction proposals, including classroom additions, security upgrades, athletic field improvements and more.

In addition, a fifth school district, Ridgefield in Bergen County, is seeking voter approval to raise additional funds to bring its educational spending to state adequacy levels by increasing instructional staffing and other expenditures.

Each of the four construction proposals, if approved, would result in state funding to cover part of the cost. Under the Educational Facilities and Construction and Financing Act of 2000, the state provides funds to cover at least 40 percent of eligible school construction costs.

The fourth Tuesday in January is one of five dates on which a school board may propose a bond issue or special question to voters. The next date available for special elections will be in March.
